Menthol began life late one night in Misc's attic. The melody started as a childishly simple synth part, which was embellished as the track took shape around a slightly off-kilter rhythm. A crunchy rhythm guitar part was added and the stakes were raised with a distorted drum loop. The main samples were taken from various European text-to-speech programs, with a little help along the way from babelfish. The odd noises towards the end come from some Japanese text-to-speech software and its amusing inability to pronounce the phrase "me so hooooorny" without descending into loop hell.
Menthol was handed over to messers Television and Rocksta in order for them to add their bass and guitar skills to the mix. The structure was then toyed with so that you are taken into swirling hooks and back into the stepping stone chorus riffs. There are elements of complaining gravelly guitar as a hardware error made the Firepod input create a lot of rolling, crashing distortion. So Television and Rocksta cut up these parts as samples. The track has grown from a bastard love child to a latch-key kid of kooky drum sounds, late night cafelectro, overly distorted guitars and polite finger picking. A global opium pipe of influences. All you need to do is fire it up, because the relating anthem speaks for itself...
